چکیده
In the current paper, we employ a novel Shadow Play Paradigm in order to test Romanian monolingual adults’ sensitivity truth and informativeness investigate their ability derive implicatures with epistemic adverbs. We show that implicature rates adverbs are higher when participants asked reward characters depending on of statements rather than whether what they say is best description situation. Given participants’ task-sensitivity, recommend instructions using optimality criteria as more sensitive method probing into generation.

Embedded Implicatures and Optimality Theoretic Pragmatics
In a recent paper, Chierchia (2004) distinguishes global and local approaches to conversational implicatures and claims that several puzzles concerning implicatures in complex sentences can best be explained by a local approach. This conflicts with the Neo-Gricean view which is global in nature. I will argue that both approaches can coexist in optimality theoretic pragmatics where the proper pl...
متن کاملEpistemic modality and truth conditions
Within the linguistics literature it is often claimed that epistemic modality, unlike other kinds of modality, does not contribute to truth-conditional content. In this paper I challenge this view. I reanalyze a variety of arguments which have been used in support of the non-truth-conditional view and show that they can be handled on an alternative analysis of epistemic modality. # 2006 Elsevie...
متن کاملTruth, Belief and Certainty in Epistemic Logic
Standard logic tends to reduce propositions to their truth conditions. However propositions with the same truth conditions are not the contents of the same thoughts just as they are not the senses of synonymous sentences. I will first define a much finer criterion of propositional identity that takes into account predications that we make in expressing propositions. In my view, propositions hav...
متن کاملEpistemic Friction: Reflections on Knowledge, Truth, and Logic
Knowledge requires both freedom and friction. Freedom to set up our epistemic goals, choose the subject matter of our investigations, espouse cognitive norms, design research programs, etc., and friction (constraint) coming from two directions: the object or target of our investigation, i.e., the world in a broad sense, and our mind as the sum total of constraints involving the knower. My goal ...
متن کاملThe grammatical nature of some epistemic - evidential adverbs in spoken
This article deals with some adverbs and adverbial constructions expressing epistemic modality in Italian. These forms are commonly considered as fully lexical. It will be shown, though, that they can be compared to grammatical forms, at least to an extent. In fact, on the one hand they are organized in a closed lexical paradigm characterized by semantic complementarity and seemingly eas y to b...
